Ethan Jacobson, Owner and Maker at Groove Line Furniture

Just having started woodworking in 2020, I fell in love with it immediately. The fascination for hand-cut joinery and the vast array of wood species has been a focal point of my work. As I delved deeper into this craft by taking classes, I began to appreciate the intricacies of design and the significant role of both function and style. In my work, I aim to let the wood narrate its tale; every piece with its distinct grain adds uniqueness to the furniture I create. My ultimate goal is to craft pieces that elevate the lives and living spaces of those who welcome them into their homes with pieces that are not only beautiful but functional as well.

I am currently pursuing a degree in Cabinetry and Architectural Woodworking at Utah Valley University. Throughout my academic journey, I have actively engaged in SkillsUSA, a transformative organization dedicated to honing students' skills for professional success. I have eagerly participated in cabinetmaking competitions at both state and national levels, clinching victory in two state competitions in 2023 and 2024. In the national arena, I proudly secured a silver medal in 2023 and recently received the Gold medal this year in 2024.

Skills USA

At SkillsUSA, participants come together to showcase their craftsmanship by creating projects within a tight timeframe of 4 to 8 hours. These projects range from side tables to jewelry boxes and step stools, each presenting its own set of unique challenges that test the skills and creativity of the participants. The judging process at SkillsUSA is known for being thorough, intensifying the pressure on the competitors as they strive to meet the criteria and stand out among their peers in this competitive environment. The time constraints further amplify the sense of competition, pushing participants to demonstrate their best work under the constraints of the clock.
